Back when I was 16 and bored and broke at boarding school a friend of mine and I tried the Anarchist's Cookbook recipe for smoking banana peels. No, they do not get you high. Yes, they are the foulest thing I've ever attempted to put in my lungs. I like my banana peels where they belong, in the compost!
It's pretty fun to try! A lot of extremely questionable recipes are difficult, and this one isn't, as long as you keep the heat on medium and watch for burning. It's not horrible; it just tastes like what it is. I think it would be fun to do with kids just because of the novelty. And you make a great point about compost -- if it can go into the compost for the garden, it's not being wasted, so please continue to chuck your peels with my blessing.
